Support Settings
Optimizing PLA support removal in Bambu Studio comes down to adjusting the vertical gap (Top Z Distance), interface layers, and switching to tree supports. 1, 2]
Key Support Settings for PLA (Single Material)
- Top Z Distance: Increase from the default
0.20 mmto0.24 mm–0.30 mm** (a sweet spot is around0.25 mmto0.275 mm). Note: Setting it to0only works if you are using a dedicated support filament like Bambu Support W or PETG as an interface layer. 1, 2, 3, 4] * **Top Interface Layers:Set to 3 layers (up from the default 2) to give the interface enough strength to peel off as a single piece rather than shattering. 1, 2]
Pro Tip (AMS Multi-Material Trick)
If you have an AMS (Automatic Material System), set your support interface material to PETG while printing the main body in PLA (and vice versa). PLA and PETG do not bond well to each other, allowing you to set the **Top Z Distance to 0 ** for a perfectly smooth bottom surface on your overhangs with zero effort required during removal. 1, 2]
For a 0.20 mm layer height using a single PLA filament, you want your support settings to provide just enough mechanical separation so they don't fuse, while still supporting the overhang.
Adjust your settings in Bambu Studio under the Support tab to match these exact values:
Optimized Settings for 0.20mm Layer Height
- Top Z Distance:
0.25 mm** (or exactly **0.26 mm**). * Why: Since you are printing at 0.20 mm layers, a0.20 mmZ-gap is too tight and will fuse. A0.25 mmor0.26 mmgap forces Bambu Studio to leave a full layer and a quarter of empty space, ensuring the PLA drops slightly but cools before bonding permanently. * **Bottom Z Distance:0.20 mm** (Matching your layer height is perfect here). * **Support Style:Tree (Auto) with Tree Slim style. * Why: Tree supports have a smaller contact area than grid/snug supports, making them incredibly easy to snap off. - Top Interface Layers:3
- Why: Increasing this from 2 to 3 creates a sturdier “cap” on top of the support tree. When you pull the support away, the interface will peel off as one clean piece instead of breaking into tiny, hard-to-scrape shards.
- Top Interface Spacing:
0.5 mm** * Why: A slight gap between the lines of the interface layer prevents it from forming a solid, un-scrappable sheet on your model. * **Normal Support/Object XY Distance: **0.35 mmto0.40 mm**- Why: This prevents the support structures from bonding to the vertical side walls of your print.
Removal Technique
Always wait for the print bed to cool down completely to room temperature before removing supports. PLA is much more pliable when warm; letting it cool makes the plastic brittle, allowing the supports to snap away cleanly at the designated Z-gap interface.
If you try these settings on your next print, let me know:
- Does the model have a lot of flat overhangs or mostly curved/organic shapes?
- If you run a quick test print, how did the underside surface quality turn out?
